Cheryl’s story
In Easterhouse, near Glasgow 19 year old Cheryl was caught in a vicious circle – to get a job she needed experience but without experience no one would give her a chance. She had studied accountancy at college but left the course early. Cheryl’s only work experience was voluntary catering experience; however she was keen to work in an office. The problem was she wasn’t getting interviews due to her lack of experience.
Cheryl agreed to a work experience placement with Greater Easterhouse Supporting Hands, a charitable organisation offering social and recreation facilities for people with a range of physical / learning disabilities.
Initially she was uncertain if the placement was right for her. Gradually, with support from the employer, her confidence grew and she settled in well. Cheryl proved to be a real asset and after the placement she was offered and accepted a full-time administration role.
