Callum’s story

Callum Clark was keen to get into the building trade but without experience he knew his chances of finding work in that sector were slim.

His Jobcentre Plus personal adviser helped him identify how to make the most of the skills and knowledge he had achieved at college and consider broadening his job search.

Local employer Timbermills, a hardware/building supplier offered Callum a work experience placement. Brian Mills, the owner of Timbermills said: ”From the outset, Callum proved his worth and was very hardworking and obliging.”

Brian had no hesitation in offering Callum a six-month contract over the busy spring/summer period, saying: “It all comes down to the individual and what they get out of it. Callum had the right attitude, and his knowledge of building materials was a big help.”

Callum is delighted at how it all worked out: “I hoped to get an employer reference and ended up with a job. I would recommend work experience to anyone; it definitely improves your chances. I know I would not have got this job without work experience.”
