Junior managerial (Executive Officer)
There are excellent opportunities to progress in management within DWP.
If you come into the Department as a manager it will usually be at Executive Officer (junior manager) level.
As an Executive Officer you could be delivering DWP services to the public, or providing specialist support in areas such as IT, Human Resources or Training. Your work could involve:
- managing and leading a team of support/administrative staff
- acting as a decision maker, for example by determining entitlement to state benefits
- helping to shape new policies, such as Human Resource policies, for the Department.
The salary range for an Executive Officer (national scale) is £18,710 - £23,990 (at 2007/2008 rates). Recruitment adverts will state the salary range to be offered.
Many Executive Officers have reached their positions through internal promotion. However, we also recruit directly to these jobs through local and national newspapers.
- There are also some specialist career paths within the Department.
- A few graduates come to the Department every year through the Civil Service Fast Stream. For information about the Fast Stream and about Civil Service careers look at the Civil Service Recruitment Gateway.
