Developing self and others

This competency applies to AA (Administrative Assistant), AO (Administratiive Officer), EO (Executive Officer), HEO (Higher Executive Officer) and SEO (Senior Executive Officer) careers.

There are three levels for this competency. The job description will tell you which levels apply to that job. Each competency level builds on the previous one:

Level 1 – Developing self

Taking responsibility for learning and self development

  • Seek feedback on my strengths and development needs, acting on suggestions for development
  • Accept and give constructive feedback in an open and supportive way
  • Take ownership for my own learning, monitoring my progress against agreed targets or objectives
  • Be open to new ways of learning

Applying learning to improve personal performance

  • Apply the lessons from both successful activities and when things go wrong
  • Develop a solid understanding of my business area/job role in line with business needs
  • Apply skills and knowledge learned from learning and development to the best of my ability

Contribute to team development

  • Share learning with others
  • Seek out new challenges for personal development which benefit self, team and DWP

Level 2 – Developing individuals and teams

Developing individuals

  • Support others towards meeting their development needs and achieving their full potential
  • Adapt my support to reflect others' diverse learning styles and motivators
  • Identify and take up any opportunities to coach and mentor others on both an informal and formal basis
  • Help others choose the most effective learning solutions for their development needs
  • Develop a depth of skill in my business area
  • Help others develop a knowledge and understanding of DWP policies relating to diversity

Motivating and developing the team

  • Praise my team for developing themselves and others
  • Create opportunities for practising, learning and developing, that are equally accessible to all
  • Challenge those who are not progressing their personal development plans, or supporting others growth
  • Establish structured ways of maintaining and sharing knowledge

Level 3 – Creating a learning environment

Developing skills needed for the future

  • Identify the future skills and knowledge capabilities required to deliver the strategy and business plan
  • Ensure learning and development opportunities will develop the skills, expertise and behaviours needed to meet the business needs

Promoting modernised environment for learning

  • Promote self development and learning opportunities within given resource constraints
  • Support new ways of learning to meet the diverse needs of individuals, taking into account reasonable adjustments to ensure inclusive learning for the diverse needs of individuals

Ensuring evaluation and continuous improvement

  • Ensure all learning and development is evaluated at individual, team and organisational levels and aligns to business goals
  • Identify opportunities to share knowledge, expertise and best practice with others both internally and externally
