Care & Mobility Considerations

The prognosis largely depends on the cause of the disorder. While they may have ongoing difficulties, most children will have little or no disability (in terms of DLA threshold). Those children that are likely to qualify for an award are likely to have an associated condition such as cerebral palsy or autistic spectrum disorder.

A few children experience moderate disability and fewer still have severe problems. Those children that will have significant care needs will be those that have severe difficulties making themselves understood or understanding instructions from others. Children with language disorders are more likely to have more significant functional difficulties.

Children who have a co-morbid condition such as autism, moderate to severe hearing impairment or a diagnosed behavioural problem are also more likely to have significant functional communication problems.

The majority of children will have no associated mobility needs, those that do are likely to have a co-morbid condition such as autism.
