SIDS
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden death of an infant under 1 year of age, which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including performance of a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the clinical history. Premature babies are at increased risk.
SIDS prevention
- Prevent infants' exposure to cigarette smoke both during and after pregnancy
- Place infants on their back to sleep
- Place baby on firm bedding, separate from parent/carer; keep away soft objects/ bedding
- Avoid overheating during sleep
- Breastfeed
