What can go wrong?

Dietary deficiency of iodine, excess iodine in the diet, tumour, inflammation or degeneration of the thyroid gland or abnormalities of the pituitary control system can all lead to increase or decrease in production of thyroid hormones.

These may cause enlargement of the gland as well as a variety of symptoms resulting from over or under production or effect of thyroid hormone.
