Tests for testicular cancer
- Ultrasound scan of the scrotum.
Tumour markers including:
- AFP – alpha-fetoprotein
- hCG – human chorionic gonadotrophin sometimes called ‘beta’ human chorionic gonadotrophin (βhCG)
- LDH – lactate dehydrogenase
These markers are more often raised in teratoma type cancers. Very high levels are associated with a poor long term outcome and these men are likely to have more intensive cancer treatment than other men with similar cancers who have lower or absent tumour markers.
- Computerised Tomography (CT) scan is the main test used to locate secondary (metastatic) disease.
