Prevalence of Primary biliary cirrhosis
Primary biliary cirrhosis is an uncommon condition with 30 cases per million in the UK; 90% of people with the disease are women. The disease usually presents in women aged 30 to 65 years. It may be associated with other auto-immune diseases such as Sjorgen's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, CREST, scleroderma, thyroiditis etc. 84% of people with primary biliary cirrhosis have at least one other auto immune disease. It is estimated that there are 12.000 to 15,000 people with primary biliary cirrhosis in the UK.
