What is Polymyalgia Rheumatica?

Polymyalgia Rheumatica is an inflammatory rheumatic condition, which manifests itself in widespread pain and stiffness in the muscles around the shoulders and pelvis (shoulder and pelvic girdle). Its cause is unknown. The name comes from the words “poly” (many) and “myalgia” (aching of the muscles). It has a sudden onset.

Incidence and Prevalence

It affects older and elderly people. It is unusual under the age of 65, and most patients are around 70. It is not “safe” to diagnose it under the age of 55.

The average age is 70 years and it is seen in 20 per 100,000 over the age of 55 years. It is more likely to affect white Caucasians than people of black ethnic origin.
