Causes

There are numerous theories about the underlying cause of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). It is likely that the cause is multifactorial. Proposed causes include genetic predisposition; brain damage from previous head injury which can precipitate OCD; neurotransmitter (serotonin and dopamine ) activity; hyperactive “circuits” in specific parts of the brain; learned behaviour and triggering life events, such as bereavement or coincidental depression which may trigger OCD in predisposed individuals.

Because of the perceived stigma attached to the condition, there is often a long delay, frequently many years, between the onset of symptoms and diagnosis.
