Treatment of Solitary Extramedullary Plasmacytoma

Local radiotherapy alone is usually used to treat this condition; daily treatment is given over 4-6 weeks. Occasionally surgery may be combined with radiotherapy. Fatigue may persist for some weeks after treatment but is not expected to be prolonged. Radiotherapy treatment nearly always relieves any symptoms or disability associated with the condition and may well be curative. Owing to the fact that this form of plasmacytoma frequently occurs in the head and neck area, enduring radiotherapy-induced side-effects such as dry mouth and throat may occur. Adjuvant chemotherapy regimens similar to those used in myeloma may rarely be used if the plasmacytoma is very large or aggressive.
