Diagnosis

Diagnosis is usually made on the basis of the clinical features in the context of the characteristic progression of the muscular weakness. It is confirmed by electromyographic studies (EMG). Blood tests, lumbar puncture and MRI scans of the brain and spinal cord are carried out to rule out other neurological disorders causing muscle paralysis. However the initial signs and symptoms of motor neurone disease may develop insidiously in some people and a firm diagnosis may not be made until the person has a considerable degree of disability.
