Classification of Learning Disability
Intelligence is a broad concept that includes the ability to reason, comprehend and make judgements. IQ [Intelligence Quotient] is the psychometric test used to assess intelligence. Intelligence is distributed in the population along a normal distribution curve. The average IQ is 100. IQs of 70 and over are considered normal.
Socio-economic factors may account for a variation in IQ by up to 20 points. Low IQ is related to lower socio-economic status, poverty, poor housing and an unstable family environment
Disease classifications ICD 10 and DSM 1V divide learning disability into 4 categories:
| Mild | IQ 50-70 |
| Moderate | IQ 35-49 |
| Severe | IQ 20-34 |
| Profound | IQ below 20 |
