Statistics
Ischaemic heart disease is the leading cause of death in most developed countries. Annually, twenty five percent (25%) of deaths in men and eighteen percent (18%) of deaths in women are due to IHD and it remains the UK’s biggest killer.
Around 130,000 people succumb each year. By using a questionnaire, physical examination and ECG, the number in the population with the condition of IHD was estimated at 24.7% of British men aged 40-59 years, although only a minority of these will have any symptoms.
Prevalence – (i.e. number of population with this condition) suggested 3% of adults i.e. 1.4 million people (Department of Health, 1996).
