What Is Hypertension?

High blood pressure, or hypertension, refers to the situation where a person’s blood pressure is persistently above the normal range.

Blood pressure has two components, the systolic pressure, which is the pressure of the blood against the blood vessel (or artery) walls, when the heart contracts, (or pumps); and the diastolic pressure, which is measured in the artery, when the heart relaxes.
