Prevalence

HIV affects about 40 million people worldwide. In 2004 there were 4.9 million new cases and 3.1 million deaths. The majority of infected people live in Sub-saharan Africa.

In 2005 there were an estimated 63,500 people aged between 15 and 59, living with HIV in the UK, of whom 20,100 (32%) had not been diagnosed. In 2005 a total of 7,450 people were newly diagnosed with HIV in the UK.
