Causes of HIV / AIDS
HIV is most commonly transmitted by unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected person. Other at risk groups include:
- Injecting drug addicts who share infected needles
- Infants who acquire the infection either during pregnancy via the placenta or after birth from infected breast milk
- People who are exposed to infected blood products, usually in developing countries
- Occupational exposure, usually following needle-stick injuries in healthcare workers.
