Prevalence of Heart Failure

• Heart failure is common.
• The overall prevalence (the percentage of the population affected with it at any given time) is approximately one per cent.
• Approximately 50% of patients with heart failure die within 5 years.
• Because of growing population of older people, including the increased number surviving myocardial infarction and ischaemic heart disease, heart failure is on the increase.
