Investigations
Blood tests
A blood test sample may be taken to measure the uric acid level. This is not always helpful in making the initial diagnosis.
Examination of joint fluid
Sometimes a sample of fluid is taken from a swollen joint. Gout can be diagnosed if needle-like crystals of uric acid are present.
X-rays
If a lot of joint damage has occurred due to repeated attacks of gout, this will show up on x-ray. This does not help with making the diagnosis in the first place, as joints are often normal then.
