How fractures occur

Bone is normally able to tolerate strong outside forces due to its tough structure, but bones may fracture if they are subject to direct impact, or strong twisting or bending. Bones may fracture due to a number of causes, most are due to an injury. Falls and road traffic accidents are common causes. Other causes include diseases that weaken bone structure such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, medications such as corticosteroids and some anti-eplileptic drugs, cancer especially metastatic deposits in bone, eating disorders, osteoporosis, and normal ageing.
