Treatment - Social Phobias
Social phobia can be treated with a number of psychotherapeutic techniques including cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) and graded exposure therapy. Various medications are also used. Benzodiazepines such as diazepam reduce the anxiety symptoms, but can lead to the risk of dependency, if used long term. Betablockers such as propranolol or atenolol help to control palpitations and tremor. Some antidepressant drugs (specific serotinin re-uptake inhibitors) (SSRIs) such as sertraline, paroxetine and fluoxetine have been shown to be effective in the condition.
