Treatment

Treatments may be in two stages. The first stage is to reduce the swelling and pain, by a formula of rest, ice treatment, compression and elevation of the injured limb. Sometimes an anti-inflammatory drug is used to help decrease the pain and inflammation.

In moderate or severe sprains, occasionally the limb is immobilised in a cast after the initial swelling has subsided.

Severe sprains where the ligaments are severely torn surgery may be needed to repair the tears.

The second stage is to improve the condition of the area and restore its function. Exercises help to aid this process.
