Treatment
Treatment is symptomatic and there are no reliable remedies that help all people with the condition. Explanation of the condition and tests to rule out more serious abdominal disorders help many people to cope with their symptoms.
Various medications are taken to relieve symptoms. These include simple analgesics, antispasmodic drugs such as mebeverine, peppermint oil,
Anti-diarrhoeals e.g. loperamide, laxatives and stool bulking agents such as isphagula. Anti depressants may also be helpful in relieving pain and psychological distress. Some people are treated with psychotherapeutic techniques such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Many individuals manage their symptoms themselves by attention to diet, adequate fluid intake and increasing the amounts of roughage consumed.
