Treatment
- With modern treatment, most people are able to control their symptoms and live productive lives. The condition therefore, rarely interferes with daily living or employment.
- In an acute attack non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are most likely to be prescribed. If NSAIDs cannot be used e.g. due to peptic ulcer or kidney disease, then colchicines may be prescribed.
- If uric acid levels remain high and frequent attacks of gout occur, then preventive treatment – usually Allopurinol is prescribed. Once started this must be continued indefinitely.
- An alternative is use of a drug that increases the rate of uric acid excretion via the kidney.
- Other measures include lifestyle management such as weight control, cutting down on alcohol, drinking plenty of water and avoiding foods high in uric acid.
