Treatment
The cornerstone of treatment is removal of the offending drug. Acute liver failure due to paracetamol overdose is treated in hospital in an intensive care setting.
In less severe cases the liver recovers spontaneously with time and jaundice fades away. In some cases steroid treatment may be given to hasten recovery. Otherwise treatment is symptomatic with agents to suppress itching, nutritional supplements and the avoidance of alcohol.
