Treatment

As it is difficult to tell whether the bone is broken or dislocated, it is important to get emergency medical assistance. In the first place the injury needs to be stabilised.

Following an assessment the joint may be manipulated back into place or surgery may be performed. The joint will be immobilised for a period of time or until the swelling and pain has subsided and the surrounding tissue has had a chance to start to heal.

Pain relief is given and rehabilitation started as soon as possible in order to ensure that functional movement is restored.
