On 17 December 2002 Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Andrew Smith released the green paper ‘Simplicity, security and choice: working and saving for retirement’ on the reform of pensions.

The green paper opened consultation about future policy and legislation, inviting comment and ideas from interested parties and the public at large. It contained options for reform, proposals for action and requests for views on particular issues. The consultation closed for responses on 28 March 2003.

More information on the pensions green paper, including the press release, a copy of the full report, executive summary and technical paper as well as a link to the Inland Revenue tax simplification paper, is available in the DWP consultation section.

In June 2003 the Secretary of State announced new measures to protect members of pension schemes and make it easier for companies to run the schemes. The proposals are the first steps the Government is taking following the consultation on the green paper. Find out more about the new pension proposals.
