Departmental responsibilities
Accounting Officers are responsible for ensuring that:
- there is the necessary legal and Treasury authority for expenditure or resource consumption; and
- the resources and funds for which they are responsible are applied only for the purposes intended by Parliament.
HM Treasury guidance
The guide “Government Accounting” [Footnote 1], produced by HM Treasury, provides guidance on the circumstances in which Departments may give financial redress when maladministration occurs.
Production of this guide
Under delegated authority from HM Treasury, DWP Viewpoint [Footnote 2] has produced this guide to provide details of how the policy set out in “Government Accounting” should be applied in the context of the work of the Department for Work and Pensions.
