Quarterly Data Summary (QDS)

Background

Government departments’ spending data is published every quarter in the QDS to show the taxpayer how the government is spending their money. We began publishing the QDS following commitments made in the 2011 Budget.

For the financial year 2012/13 we have revised and improved the QDS to provide a common set of data that will enable comparisons of operational performance across government so that departments and individuals can be held to account.

The QDS breaks down the total spend of the department by:

Currently this data is published on individual departments’ websites. However, in the future this data will be available centrally through an online application.

The QDS template is the same for all departments, though the individual detail of grants and policy will differ from department to department.

Quarter 1 – 2012/13

QDS Publications – previous format

The QDS was published in a previous format from July 2011 to July 2012 (covering periods up to the end of the 2011/2012 financial year). It provided a quarterly snapshot of how each department was spending its budget, the results it had achieved and how it was deploying its workforce.

Please pay careful attention to the accompanying Measurement Annex which outlines the caveats and nuances surrounding the data. Many of the measures are not directly comparable between departments because they do not have common definitions, time periods, or data collection processes.
