Financial Assistance Scheme

The Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) offers help to some people who have lost out on their pension because they were a member of an under-funded defined benefit scheme that started to wind-up on or after 1 January 1997 but before 22 December 2008 and is ineligible for help from the Pension Protection Fund because the sponsoring employer became insolvent before 6 April 2005.

The Government Actuary’s Department provides actuarial advice to the UK government, including DWP’s Financial Assistance Scheme policy team.

Pension Protection Fund

Established by the Pensions Act 2004 to pay compensation to members of defined benefit pension schemes which have been wound up due to insolvency and meet certain eligibility criteria.

The Pensions Advisory Service is an independent non-profit organisation that provides information and guidance on the whole spectrum of pensions covering State, company, personal and stakeholder schemes.

The Pensions Ombudsman

Investigates and decides complaints and disputes about the way that pension schemes are run.

The Pensions Regulator

The Pensions Regulator is the UK regulator of work-based pension schemes, supervising the pension industry and employers who administer pension schemes. A work-based pension scheme is any scheme that an employer makes available to employees. This includes all occupational schemes, and any stakeholder and personal pension schemes where employees have direct payment arrangements. A free Pensions Trustee toolkit is available.
