20 December 2006 - New Non-Executive Board members

Eight new Non-Executive Board members have been appointed to a number of Departmental Boards and Committees, the Department’s Permanent Secretary, Leigh Lewis, announced today.

Those appointed will serve on the Department’s Main Board, the Board of Jobcentre Plus, the Board of the Disability and Carers Service, the Information Directorate Board, the IS/IT strategy sub-committee and the Pensions Client Board.

Welcoming the appointments, Leigh Lewis said:

“I am delighted to welcome these new Non-Executive Board members to the Department. They bring with them tremendous skill and expertise from across the private and public sectors. I am certain that they will make a major contribution to the Department and the work that we undertake.”

Commenting on the appointments, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, John Hutton, said “I am extremely pleased that my Department is going to benefit from the very wide range of skill and experience that these new non-executive Board members will bring.”

  1. The details of those appointed are:
    • Adrian Fawcett
      Adrian is Chief Operating Officer of Punch Taverns plc. Prior to that he worked at Interbrew and Bass Brewers.
    • Helen Stevenson
      Helen Stevenson is the Chief Marketing officer for Yell UK. She has previously worked at Mars and Lloyds TSB.
    • John Clare
      John Clare is Chief Executive of DSG international PLC and a member of the National Employment Panel.
    • William Roe
      William Roe is Chairman of Highlands and Islands Enterprise and has just completed chairmanship of the Scottish Executive’s 21st Century Social Work Group.
    • John Hills
      John Hills has recently served on the Pensions Commission. He is currently Professor of Social Policy and Director of the ESRC Research Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion at the London School of Economics.
    • John Elbourne
      John Elbourne was Chief Executive of Prudential Assurance UK from 1996 to 2001. Prior to that he worked for both Lloyds TSB and Legal and General.
    • Fergie Williams
      Fergie Williams’s background is in the IT and the banking community, having spent 20 years in HSBC, including as CIO Europe. He is currently part-time CIO at Travelex.
    • David Day
      David Day is European Chief Executive Officer of Lightspeed Research and previously worked at AC Nielsen UK, NetRatings and the UK Government Statistical Service.
