What issue was the organisation facing?
There were a number of health and safety risks in each department of the hotel, given the nature of the business. The main health and safety risks in hotels are musculoskeletal disorders, dermatitis, knife injuries and slips/trips.
What action did the organisation take?
The Crown Spa Hotel provides training on health and safety for its employees on a monthly basis. This training includes:
- manual handling
- fire safety
- accident spotting
- bomb threat
- electrical testing
- risk assessments.
The hotel has also introduced an accident spreadsheet to monitor incidents and to see if certain departments were more at risk than others. An analysis of the results found that the main area of concern was the kitchen areas, with minor cuts and slips being a major issue. The results of this analysis were presented at their regular health and safety meeting and as a result, further targeted training was provided to kitchen staff to reduce the accidents in that area.
What has been the impact of implementing health interventions?
The Crown Spa Hotel received an award from a leading Health and Safety organisation, The Royal Society For the Prevention of Accidents in the workplace (ROSPA) in recognition of the commitment to their employees and their health and well-being.
