A ‘Have a Go Roadshow’ event came to Sainsburys supermarket in Frome, Somerset, on Wednesday 1 February, to give unemployed people in the area an opportunity to try a wide range of free skills tasters. The Roadshow, which is organised by Norton Radstock College and financed through European Social Fund, has been supported by Bath and North East Somerset Council and the Connexions Service. It began at the Southside Youth Hub in Bath on 20 January and since then it has visited Bath Jobcentre and Sainsbury’s Midsomer Norton before coming to Frome.
The Roadshow is part of the national WorldSkills ‘Have a Go’ campaign - linked to the WorldSkills London 2011 competition held in October last year. The last in this series of events was held on 11 February at the Norton Radstock College Open Day.
Have a Go organiser at Norton Radstock College, Becca Thurston, said: “A high proportion of people looking for work want to pursue a new career, the Have a Go Roadshow allows them to have a try at a range of practical activities in a relaxed atmosphere without any pressures.
“Activities will include things like bricklaying, nail art, horticulture and engineering and we’ll have advisors on hand to provide general information and advice about careers and looking for work.”
Richard Treharne - Manager of Sainsbury’s Frome, said: “We are delighted to support this project and are committed to supporting the local community. Developing the local skills base and opportunities for employment can only help further the economic growth of the area.”
Norton Radstock College is aiming for over 1000 completed activities during the Have a Go events. Anyone aged 16 or over is welcome to attend and help contribute towards the WorldSkills national target of 1 million Have a Go opportunities.
Each Have a Go Roadshow is also attended by Bath and North East Somerset Jobmother – a local specialist in job search, CV writing, employability skills and job coaching.
Norton Radstock College has a wide range of training and opportunities, including support for jobseekers of all ages, and students are welcome to join throughout the year.
