The Innovation, Transnational and Mainstreaming (ITM) strand of the current ESF programme seeks to develop and trial innovative approaches to moving individuals towards the labour market.

Starting in 2009, 32 projects backed by £23 million ESF have been developing and delivering new ways of extending opportunities and raising workforce skills.

As part of their activity each project has co-operated with a partner from at least one other EU Member State. They have had a strong focus on sharing lessons and seeking to inform policy development and delivery through mainstreaming their outcomes.

A new qualitative study has been published to evaluate how the ITM strand is being delivered, whether it has been effective in generating new ideas to influence policy and delivery, and what the key lessons are for future transnational activities in the next round of ESF.
