Working in the tourism sector – questions for small to medium-sized
businesses
- If you provide information on how to get to your venue using public transport, could you include details about accessible public transport too?
- Can you provide designated wider parking spaces for disabled customers close to your venue? You may need to work with your local council to arrange this if the parking is not on private property.
- If you are unsure how to make an attraction or event accessible to disabled people, ask them and try to act on their advice. Keep a record of temporary access adjustments you have made so you can repeat them for visitors with similar impairments.
- Can you ensure that toilets are accessible?
- In hotels and guesthouses think carefully about how you provide accessible bathrooms and toilet facilities. It is worth consulting expert access auditors to make sure your facilities are accessible and can be used by as many disabled visitors as possible.
- Could you consider making guidebooks, programmes and other information available in accessible formats such as large print, Braille and audio tape?
- Could you invest in an induction loop to help hearing impaired people to access your services?
- If people have to queue for long periods can you provide seating or back rests? If people have to cover long distances, consider providing a few wheelchairs that disabled customers can borrow for their visit.
