Solent Sky Aviation Museum – case study

The Solent Sky Aviation Museum has two disabled volunteers. Their direct experience of having a disability, ensures the needs of disabled visitors are a primary concern.

The museum attracts a number of disabled visitors throughout the year. The entrance to the museum is level and access to the upper floors is by lift. A disabled toilet is available on the ground floor.

The two volunteers, Paul, who has muscular dystrophy and Paul, who is receiving chemotherapy, both know sign language and often use it to communicate with hearing impaired visitors.

Alan Jones, Curator of the museum, said: “Meeting the needs of our disabled visitors is integrated into the whole approach of the museum and its staff. Without our disabled visitors we could not stay open.”
