The Art Shop

Ian Hughes, owner of the Art Shop, believes meeting the needs of disabled customers should not be restricted to making just physical adjustments. As Ian pointed out: "Making sure your business is providing the right kind of assistance is beneficial to all customers, not just disabled people."

Staff at the art shop have a positive attitude towards disability and are willing to spend time with each customer when necessary, for example, to read and explain instructions. One member of staff has epilepsy so they understand the importance of treating all customers equally.

The shop has a number of regular disabled customers, particularly people with mobility impairments. To ensure customers can access all areas of the shop easily the front steps at the entrance were removed and replaced with a ramp. The doorway was also widened by 1 metre and a bell added so customers can now request staff assistance. The shop has even installed a lift so people with mobility impairments can access the upper floors of the shop.
