Old Farm Hotel – case study

The Old Farm Hotel in Birmingham is ready to welcome disabled guests after making a number of changes to meet the individual needs of anyone who stays. As the owner, Antony Voogd, explains, “Although the hotel does not have a large number of regular disabled guests I feel that it is important to make adjustments so that when disabled guests do come and stay that they enjoy their experience.”

The owner recently resurfaced the car park to provide easier access for wheelchair users. The resurfacing raised the level of the ground outside the hotel to create level access to the entrance. Double doors at the front of the hotel mean wheelchair users can easily enter the building.

A ground floor bedroom has been adapted to easily accommodate disabled guests. Adjustments include placing plug sockets at a height suitable for wheelchair users and creating a wet room in the bathroom so customers in wheelchairs can easily use the shower. Grab rails and a stool have also been added for support for those with mobility impairments. An alarm has been fitted in the bedroom to enable disabled guests to alert staff if they require any extra support. The needs of guests with a hearing impairment have also been considered. Strobe lighting informs guests when the fire alarm has been triggered.

Excellent customer service ensures that the needs of guests are a priority. The personal service extends to the dining room where staff will take the time to speak to visually impaired guests about the menu options.
