Treworgans Farm – case study
Effectively meeting the needs of disabled guests has proved extremely beneficial for Treworgans farm in Cornwall. Over 80% of the guests at the farm are disabled so making adjustments has, as owner, David Eyles, explained, “really paid off”. According to David, “When we converted the disused barns into holiday accommodation we thought very carefully about the needs of disabled people.” The self catering cottages were designed with accessibility in mind. For example, the height of the hob in the kitchen can be adjusted to meet the individual requirements of disabled people. There is also clear space under the kitchen sink and hob to allow wheelchair users to use facilities easily. Adjustments to the bathroom include grab rails and a wheel-in shower facility.
Level access around the premises ensures wheelchair users can move freely around the grounds. Guests with mobility impairments can park right next to their cottages enabling them to access the building easily.
The adjustments have brought a number of benefits for the farm. As well as being good for business the owner gets satisfaction from seeing his guests have an enjoyable holiday. David explained, “It is great to see that disabled people can come here and have a really good time. What is interesting is that some guests tell us that coming here is a real holiday as our accommodation is even more accessible than their own home.”
