Gaer Cottages – Case study
With more than half of their guests being disabled people, the owners of Gaer Cottages, based in Ceredigion, know the benefits of making adjustments. While some of these adjustments are substantial, they have also considered simple, effective ways of providing facilities for disabled guests.
For instance, mobile hoists are available on request to enable people to get in and out of bed easily, and the swimming pool has been fitted with a hoist so that the pool is fully accessible to anyone wishing to use it. There is also designated parking available and space for larger vehicles if groups of disabled people wish to visit.
The website has also been designed with disabled customers in mind. The site explains in detail the adjustments that have been made and allows prospective guests to check the accessibility before booking by way of a detailed access statement.
All of this is in addition to the more major adjustments. For instance, one cottage has a fully accessible kitchen, including facilities at a height suitable for wheelchair users. Three of the cottages have accessible bathrooms with wet shower rooms. People with mobility impairments are able to use the facility, as there is no shower cubicle or tray. Seats and grab rails have also been fitted.
Owner Jeff Rice said: “Guests often tell us that it is so nice to find somewhere that is accessible. With 50% of our guests being disabled people I do not need any convincing that there is a decent market for providing accessible holiday accommodation. No doubt as the market matures more businesses will see the potential.”
