Grasmere hotel – case study

Since making a number of adjustments to meet the needs of disabled customers, the Grasmere hotel in Wiltshire has increased its customer base. The owner of the hotel, Dale Naug, believes this is because the Grasmere now, “offers a service that is not offered by other hotels in the area.”

The hotel offers a number of benefits for disabled guests. One of the ground floor bedrooms has been specially adapted for wheelchair users. Adjustments include altering the height of the table and mirror to enable wheelchair users to access them easily. The wardrobe is also designed with low hanging space so it is within easy reach for wheelchair users.

A number of adjustments have also been made in the bathroom. The wet room design ensures wheelchair users can easily access the shower. Grab rails and a stool have been added to provide further support. The Grasmere has also adapted a further four ground floor bedrooms to accommodate guests with mobility impairments.

The needs of disabled guests have been considered in the communal areas of the hotel. There is level access throughout the ground floor of the hotel so guests with mobility impairments can easily move around into the restaurant and bar areas. An accessible toilet is also available for disabled guests.

A ramp has been installed in the grounds of the hotel so guests with mobility impairments can access the gardens. Parking is also available close to the hotel entrance to ensure disabled guests do not have far to go to reach the front door.

Dale believes more hotels should be thinking about the needs of disabled customers. He said, “There is a need to improve facilities for disabled people because they have a right to go on holiday like everyone else. Hotels like mine give disabled people more freedom.”
