Black Cock Pub – case study

Staff and management at the Black Cock pub, in South Wales, place an emphasis on meeting the needs of both disabled customers and staff who come to the establishment. The owner, Mike Howells, says that the business has deliberately strived to create a better awareness. “The service we offer is popular with our customers who have somewhere to go where they know their needs will be met. Disabled people come and enjoy their time at the pub and it helps us to remember to be mindful of others.”

Mr Howells employs a kitchen porter who has a mobility impairment. The employee is given flexible hours and specific tasks which fully take into account his impairment and ensure that both employer and employee benefit from the arrangement.

Mr Howells has also sponsored a learning disabled person who is currently training as a chef and will work for the Black Cock pub on completion of the training.

The building itself has level access inside and outside for wheelchair users.
