Working in legal practices – questions for small to medium-sized businesses
- Legal advice and documentation can be complicated. Can you provide advice and information that is in simple language? You could also explain it to clients simply so they can make informed decisions
- Can you provide clients with legal documents and other paperwork in different formats, e.g. large print, Braille or audio tape?
- If your premises are not accessible, can you visit some clients at home or meet them at an alternative accessible site?
- Where you find a disabled client difficult to understand or communicate with, could you use a specialist interpreter, such as a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter, or other means of communication, such as writing things down, to ensure that you fully understand your client’s instructions and that they understand your advice?
- Getting good staff who understand the legal system is difficult. Have you thought about how to retain them if they acquire a disability? That could mean adjustments to the office or to methods of working.
