Secretariat support for the Ethnic Minority Employment Stakeholder Group (EMESG) and its project groups is provided by the Ethic Minority Team which is part of the Social Justice Directorate at the Department for Work and Pensions. The Team helps EMESG manage its role of advising government departments whose policies impact on labour market performance.
The team is committed to:
- influencing other government departments who own policy levers, for example: procurement, language, employer discrimination in the labour market
- working with and influencing other policy teams in DWP to ensure that mainstream policies for benefit recipients meet the needs of ethnic minorities and ensure that ethnic minorities do not suffer disproportionately
- working with Jobcentre Plus to ensure that it achieves better parity of outcomes.
The team’s remit also includes employment strategy development for disadvantaged groups in the labour market, including:
- offenders
- homeless
- ex-service personnel
- those who are socially exclude
- problem drug users.
