Focus groups with New Deal and Employment Zone customers: Research to inform Flexible New Deal

by Lorna Adams and Katie Carter

This report presents findings from a qualitative study involving group discussions with customers who were claiming Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) or had done so in the recent past. The study consisted of ten focus groups with JSA customers who had either experienced Employment Zone provision, experienced New Deal provision or been claiming JSA for a period of between 12 and 18 months without experiencing either type of intensive provision. The research explored customer views of the provision that they had accessed and the extent to which it had helped them to find work or move them closer to finding employment, focusing particularly on comparing the experiences of those in Employment Zone areas with those who had experienced the New Deal process.
