Savings and Life Events
Research Report No. 194
By Stephen McKay and Elaine Kempson
This report presents findings from a research study commissioned to explore the patterns of people's saving behaviour and pension provision, and in particular, how these are affected by various key life events, such as getting married, having children or receiving a windfall. The findings are based on analysis of the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) for 1991-2000, an annual longitudinal survey of adults in a nationally representative sample of over 5,500 households. The report describes the patterns of savings and pensions for the most recent data (2000/01) and over the ten previous ten years. The research was commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions and was carried out by the Personal Finance Research Centre at the University of Bristol.
