Research Report No. 189

By Roy Sainsbury, Anne Corden and Naomi Finch

This report presents findings from qualitative research to evaluate the Medical Evidence Gathering pilot, which ran in the Sheffield and Rotherham area during 2002. The aim of the pilot was to test alternative arrangements for providing medical evidence to approved doctors who give advice to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Decision Makers who determine eligibility for state Incapacity Benefits. The report is based on depth interviews and small group interviews with clients, GPs and practice managers, Decision Makers, DWP processing staff and approved doctors. The research was commissioned by the DWP and was carried out by the Social Policy Research Unit at the University of York.
