European Year of Disabled People 2003: UK Evaluation

In-House Report No. 145

By Gordon Dryden and Shirley Garner

This report contains the findings from an independent evaluation of the implementation of the European Year of Disabled People in the UK. The report maps projects and EYDP activities that took place to gain an understanding of the volume and range of activity generated by the additional funding. It then examines the organisation and delivery of the EYDP, focusing on the roles of the Secretariat, the Government Steering Group and the National Co-ordinating Committee. Finally, it examines the project grant making process and centrally co-ordinated activities such as the national launch events, the media training and Helpline, and the EC Campaign Bus.

The focus of the report is on identifying elements of projects which helped the achievement of aims and objectives and which helped to meet the expectations of disabled beneficiaries. The report concludes with an overall assessment of how well the EYDP had achieved its objectives and offers recommendations that may be helpful in future similar initiatives.
