Deferrals in Jobcentre Plus: Research into and Application of Deferral Guidance for Non-Jobseeker's Allowance Customers

In-House Report No. 126

By Jean Taylor and Yvette Hartfree

Working age customers making a new or repeat claim for benefit in integrated Jobcentre Plus offices are required to take part in a work-focused interview. However, for non-JSA customers, where it would not be of assistance to the customer, or would not be appropriate, this meeting can be deferred or waived.

This report presents findings from qualitative research with Jobcentre Plus staff and customers in Pathfinder offices to examine the deferrals and waivers process, considering staff understanding and application of the processes in light of revised guidance.
